The modern Turkish Navy operates twelve total submarines in its inventory and four of these belong to the Preveze-class built to the German "Type 209" standard (detailed elsewhere on this site). The popular, compact, and effective Type 209 boats were designed during the 1960s and entered commissioned service beginning in 1971 with sixty-one of the sixty-four planned being built. These went on to serve a myriad of global customers that currently includes Turkey. TCG Preveze (S-353), the lead boat of the class, was commissioned for active service in 1994 and continues in its role today (2019).

More specifically, the Preveze-class is built on the Type 209/1400 variant of the Type 209 family line.

TCG Preveze (S-353) has inherent support for the UGM-84 "Sub-Harpoon" anti-ship missile weapon system, adding to the lethality of the existing 8 x 21" (533mm) torpedo tubes (themselves supporting the Mark 24 "Tigerfish" or DM2A4 "SeaHake mod 4" torpedo lines) it already carries (up to 14 reloads). Dimensions of the boat include a running length of 211 feet, a beam of 21 feet, and a draught of 20 feet. Power is through a conventional diesel-electric arrangement involving four diesel units and battery stores developing over 6,000 horsepower to 1 x Shaft astern. Performance includes a surfaced speed of 11.5 knots and a submerged speed nearing 23 knots. Range is out to 11,000 nautical miles giving the boat good endurance. The boat is crewed by 36 personnel with supplies lasting about 50 days at-sea.
