Relative to its size, Singapore fields an impressive navy (the Republic of Singapore Navy - RoSN) stocked with vessels to cover the primary facets of naval warfare. This includes an undersea fighting force currently made up of the Sweden-born Archer-class and Swedish-born Challenger-class. These two classes account for four total boats - RSS Archer with RSS Swordsman and RSS Conqueror with RSS Chieftain. The two groups are set to be succeeded by the all-new Invincible-class to number four total boats through a partnership with Germany.

Four boats in the class are planned - RSS Invincible, RSS Impeccable, RSS Illustrious, and RSS Inimitable. Lead-ship RSS Invincible was launched on February 18th, 2019 and has been delivered for review by the RoSN. The remaining three are under construction as of January 2022. Invincible was constructed by the specialist shipbuilders of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems of Kiel, Germany (where the design is recognized as the "Type 218SG"). The second boat of the class is expected to be delivered sometime in 2022.

Structurally, the design is of relatively compact form housing just 26 to 28 crew. Dimensions include a length of 229.7 feet and a beam of 20.7 feet. This small footprint allows the craft to operate in Close-to-Shore (CtS) environments with ease and its streamlined shaping gives it hydrodynamic efficiency. Power is through an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system that includes 2 x PEM fuel cell banks offering 120 kW output. Submerged speeds reach 15 knots while surfaced travel is limited to 12 knots. Displacement of the vessel reaches 2,400 tons when submerged and 2,200 tons surfaced.

The boat is an attack submarine at heart, armed through no fewer than eight torpedo tubes. These launchers have the inherent capability to not only launch submarine/ship-hunting torpedoes but also land-attack cruise missiles - namely the American "Tomahawk". A specially-designed airlock also supports special forces "frogmen" for clandestine operations requiring silent insertion/extraction of forces.

The profile of the vessel is largely conventional with a blunt, rounded bow, mid-set sail, and tapering stern. Dive planes are fitted at the midway point between bow and sail while the sail itself contains all of the needed sensors, processing systems, snorkel, and periscopes. The stern is capped by the single propeller unit. Ahead of this is seated the fins making up the rudders, these planes arranged in an "X" pattern.

With the addition of RSS Invincible, the RoSN has introduced its most modern, powerful attack submarine to date.©MilitaryFactory.com
