CNS Dalian (105) was commissioned for service into the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) on April 23rd, 2021, joining sister ships CNS Nanchang (101) and CNS Lhasa (102) in the process. All have been given active assignments with the North Sea Fleet. Dalian was constructed by the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company and launched on July 3rd, 2018. Up to five more vessels are currently planned for the group with a total of sixteen warships to be procured in all.
Dalian is built to the Type 055 design which fulfills the guided-missile destroyer role for the PLAN. These warships are given stealth qualities including integrated hull/superstructure lines, reduced protrusions, and a broad collection of armament options to counter most any threat at-sea. With their multi-mission mindsets, the class is capable of individual or fleet-related actions and fulfills a role similar to the United States Navy's Arleigh Burke-class. Due to their inherent capabilities, the USN sees these warships as cruisers rather than destroyers.
Type 055 warships have been under construction since 2014 and began entering service in 2020.
The class displaces around 13,000 tonnes under full load and has a running length of 590.6 feet, a beam of 65.6 feet, and a draught of 21.7 feet. Power is conventional, made up of 6 x QD-50 turbine generators developing 6,700 horsepower apiece for a total rated output capability of 40,000 horsepower from this set. Additionally, there are 4 x QC-280 gas turbines of 38,000 horsepower each for a total rated output capability of 150,000 horsepower. With this hybrid coupling, the vessel is arranged in a COmbined Gas-And-Gas (COGAG) format, allowing the various units to come into play as needed as a fuel-savings measure. The vessel can make headway at 30 knots and range out to 5,000 miles.
Aboard is a crew of 300 personnel and systems include the Type 346B C/S-band radar unit and fully-integrated Electronic Warfare (EW) system. As expected, the warship also carries bow-mounted sonar and a towed array for combating undersea threats.
Armament consists of 1 x 130mm H/PJ-38 series turreted deck gun and 1 x H/PJ-11 digital Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) as ballistics-based solutions. However, the heart of the attack nature of this ship is its reliance on missile weaponry: There are two (65-cell, 48-cell) vertically-set tube launchers with one fitted fore and the other aft. These can be made up of the HHQ-9 SAM for aerial threats or replaced by surface-to-surface solutions in the YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missile or CJ-10 cruise missile series. Also carried are 2 x 324mm torpedo tubes for the Yu-7 torpedo family.
The profile of CNS Dalian is consistent with the Type 055 class. The forecastle is relatively unobstructed save for the deck gun midway between the bow and the stage ahead of the forward superstructure section. The bridge sits atop the structure for commanding views of the environment ahead. The main mast is completely shrouded and integrated to the rear of the bridge section. Aft of this are the twin funnel units with are, themselves, enclosed and of low profile design. A break is seen aft of these structures and followed by the aft-superstructure which houses the hangar facilities for a pair of Harbin H-9 navy helicopters. Servicing the duo is a helipad fitted over the extreme end of the ship.
In general service, CNS Dalian is expected to fulfill the role of airspace deterrence, land-attack, and submarine hunter. In fleet support, the design will be operated alongside Chinese aircraft carriers.
