Since 2005, the modern Turkish Navy has been operating ships from the Aydin-class in the "minehunter" role, six vessels based in an original German design. The first ship-of-the-class, TCG Alanya (M-265), was built at the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Lurssen, Germany and this lead-ship was then followed by five additional sister ships in TCG Amasra (M-266), TCG Ayvalik (M-267), TCG Akcakoca (M-268), TCG Anamur (M-269), and TCG Akcay (M-270). This batch was constructed by the local Istanbul Naval Shipyard of Turkey. Alanya was commissioned for service, along with Amasra, in July of 2005. Ayvalik and Akcakoca followed in June and September of 2007, respectively.

Due to their names (all beginning with the letter "A"), the class is also known as the "A-class". All six of the vessels maintain an active status in the Turkish Navy as of this writing (2019).

As built, the warships displace 650 tons and have a length of 178 feet, a beam measuring 30 feet, and a draught down to 8.5 feet. The hull has the unique, in-built quality of being non-magnetic, following the German Navy lead - and this elevates the survivability of the class considerably. Propulsion power is from 2 x MTU 16V 538 TB91 marine diesels coupled with 2 x Electric motors tied to 2 x Renik PLS25E transmission systems. This arrangement drives power to 2 x Shafts under stern, propelling the vessels to speeds nearing 18 knots.

Aboard is a crew of about forty-one personnel. A Marconi 2093 series VDS unit serves in the sonar mine-hunting role. The DRBN 32 is the warship's navigation radar system. 2 x "Barricade chaff and flare launchers are carried for missile defense.

Installed armament includes 1 x 30mm automatic gun and 2 x 12.7mm Heavy Machine Guns (HMGs) for extreme close-in defense. 2 x PAP-105 Mk.5 series mine-hunting systems are also carried. Full diving facilities are also afforded to mine specialists.©MilitaryFactory.com
