When introduced for active service in June of 1999 with the People's Liberation Army Navy, the Type 039 submarine became the first such vessel to be completely designed, developed and manufactured in China. The all-modern boat is a conventionally-powered diesel-electric submarine capable of undertaking traditional attack or deterrent missions as needed. It forms part of the 13-strong "Song-class" of underwater fighting boats for the Chinese navy.

As completed, the vessel displaces at 2,250 tons when submerged. Its length is 75 meters with a beam reaching 8.4 meters and a draught down to 5.3 meters. Its diesel-electric propulsion arrangement drives a single shaft as the vessel hits speed of 22 knots when submerged down to depths of 300 meters. The typical crew complement is 60 officers and sailors divided into watches. Armament is centered around six torpedo tubes and the boat can carry up to 18 total reloads. Its tubes can also support the launching of anti-ship missiles for engaging targets inland. This armament can be replaced by 36 naval mines for when the vessel is called to mine areas and vital waterways against hostile intruders.

Sensors and processing systems include a Thomson-CSF TSM-2233 sonar system, the TSM-2255 low-frequency sonar system, and the passive ranging sonar H/SQG-04 sonar suite.©MilitaryFactory.com
