Isaac Peral (S-81) is a newly-commissioned diesel-electric attack submarine for the Spanish Navy. The design belongs to the "S-80 Plus-class" succeeding the earlier French/Spanish-originated Scorpene-class boats. The Spanish Navy has committed to four of the S-80 Plus boats constructed locally by Navantia in Cartagena. The newer design displaces 3,000 tons submerged, has a running length of 265.10 feet, and is powered through a conventional diesel-electric arrangement.

The class faced major design and political delays as it was scheduled to enter serial production in 2003 - though the first boat was not commissioned until 2023, some twenty years later. As such, construction of the remaining three boats is expected to continue into 2028.

The non-nuclear propulsion scheme encompasses 3 x Bio-Ethanol engines of 1,200kW power output each unit, an electric motor providing 3,500kW power, and an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) fuel cell unit. This complete system allows the boat to reach surfaced speeds of 12 knots and, more importantly, up to 19 knots submerged. Range is out to 5,000 miles and mission endurance can reach 55 days with onboard stores and fuel supplies.

The hull has been tested down to depths of 1,510 feet and the complement equals 32 enlisted and officer-level personnel.

Armament is 6 x 533mm (21") torpedo tubes in the bow, these cleared to fire the DM2A4 torpedo family as well as the American UGM-84 "Sub-Harpoon" (Block II) anti-ship missile weapon.

The boat's overall profile is conventional as attack submarines go: the bow is of the rounded snub nose design for cutting through water. The hull is tubular in is general shape and the rounded sail is set forward of amidships. The hull then tapers towards the stern to which tailplanes are arranged in a cruciform pattern. The multi-bladed propeller unit extends a short distance away from the planes.

Despite its early-2000s roots, the end-result is an all-modern attack boat with all the expected modern systems installed including the Integrated Combat System Core (ICSC), low noise operation, low magnetic signature, active and passive sonar, protected communications links, and sensors and detection systems.

Sister ships yet to come online are Narciso Monturiol (S-82), Cosme Garcia (S-83), and Mateo Garcia de Los Reyes (S-84) expected in 2024, 2026, and 2027, respectively. Once complete the boats will overtake the in-service 1,760 tonne Galerna-class series comprised of just two attack boats and built in the early 1980s.
