A long coastline, burgeoning regional arms race, and unsettled maritime claims with its neighbors force South Korea to keep a modern and active naval force. It has followed the world lead by employing fleets of guided-missile platforms as is the case with the ROKS Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin (DDH-975), a guided missile destroyer launched on May 22nd, 2002 and formally commissioned on December 2nd, 2003. She keeps an active status in the South Korean Navy as of this writing (2014) and was constructed by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

DDH-975 serves as the lead ship of the Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin-class of fighting destroyers. She displaces at 4,800 tons under standard load and near 5,000 tons under full load. Dimensions include a running length of 492.1 feet, a beam of 55.8 feet, and a draught of 31.1 feet. Her propulsion system is conventional and consists of a CODOG ("COmbined Diesel Or Gas") arrangement. CODOG features a diesel engine and a geared gas turbine mated to each propeller shaft for high-speed dashing though only one engine is in play to the shaft at any one time (in contrast to the more complex CODAG arrangement seen in other warships). Her machinery allows for speeds near 30 knots in ideal conditions and ranges out to 5,500 nautical miles.

Outwardly, Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin has adopted modern shipbuilding design practices that includes slab-sided frontal and aft superstructures. Her main mast is enclosed and her smoke funnel well-integrated into her profile. At front is a sole deck gun with unobstructed views over the bow and to either side of the forward hull. Just aft of the gun is a Lockheed Mk 41 series Vertical Launching System (VLS) emplacement containing the bulk of her missile armament. The bridge sits aft of these cells and is clearly identified by its row of large windows. A missile launcher on a traversable mounting is situated atop the bridge superstructure and aft of this is the main mast containing the sensors, communications, and processing systems. The enclosed smoke funnel resides amidships with a pair of anti-ship missile quad launchers. Aft of this is the second superstructure containing air search and fire control systems along its roof as well as additional defensive weaponry. The stern features a helicopter deck for the launching and retrieval of a medium-lift navy helicopter system with full hangar services provided. Armament of Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin begins with the 5" Mk 45 /54 caliber naval deck gun at front. The ship also carries a 32-cell VLS with SM-2 Block IIIA (RIM-66 Standard) missiles medium-range surface-to-air missiles for air defense. There is also an optional 32-cell bank that can be utilized under a full war load to launch rocket-assisted torpedoes or cruise missiles at sea- or land-based targets. A RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) launcher provides close-in defense against inbound aerial threats. Its trainable mounting gives it flexible engagement angles. At midships is located a pair of AGM-84 Harpoon quad missile launchers for anti-ship duty. Extreme close-in defense work is handled by a 30mm "Goalkeeper" seven-barreled. Gatling-style gun system - comparable to the American 20mm Phalanx installation.

Among Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin's onboard systems is the Raytheon AN/SPS-49(V)5 2D air search radar set. The Thales (Signaal) MW08 3D G-band PESA (Passive, Electronically-Scanned Array) fire control target-marking radar is also fitted. Enemy submarines can be tracked/engaged through the DSQS-23 series hull-mounted active search/attack sonar system. There is also a Daewoo Telecom towed sonar array. Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin is outfitted with four chaff radar countermeasure launchers to help disrupt tracking threats to the ship.©MilitaryFactory.com
