The modern Turkish Navy currently (2023) fields three different classes of frigate warships - the Gabya-class (former USN Oliver Hazard Perry-class), the Barbaros/Salihreis-class built in Germany and Turkey, and the Yavuz-class, the oldest collection of the group. TCG Turgutreis (F241) was built to the Yavuz-class of which four total hulls were completed (F240, F241, F242, and F243). These 3,300 tonne warships were respectively launched in 1987, 1988, 1988, and 1989. For her part in the story, Turgutreis was launched on May 30th, 1986, was formally commissioned into service on February 4th, 1988, and maintains an active status in the Turkish surface fleet.

TCG Turgutreis was one of the two ships of the class (joining Yavuz) to be built in Germany by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft of Kiel. She displaces 3,030 tons under full load, has a running length of 362.5 feet, a beam of 43.5 feet, and a draught of 12.9 feet. Power is from 4 x MTU 20V1163 marine diesels outputting 30,000 horsepower to 2 x Shafts in a COmbined Diesel-And-Diesel (CODAD) arrangement. This arrangement gives the warship headway speeds of up to 27 knots and range out to 4,000 nautical miles.

Aboard is a complement of 180 to include 29 officers. The ship is outfitted with the TM1126, AWS-6, HAS D08, and HAS STIR 124 radar systems to help deal with most at-sea threats, be they from the air, the surface, or undersea. The Electronic Warfare (EW) suite is in the process of being modernized to help extend the ship's sea-going service life. The sonar fit is the SQS-56 series.

The ship is armed through 1 x 5" /54 caliber turreted deck gun, 2 x Mk 141 RGM-84 "Harpoon" quadruple missile launchers (anti-ship), 1 x Mk.21 RIM-7 "Sea Sparrow" Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) launcher (16 reloads), 3 x 25mm Oerlikon Contraves "Sea Zenith" Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWSs), and 2 x Mk.32 triple torpedo tubes. Furthering its offensive capabilities is support for a single AB212 (or similar) medium-lift navalized helicopter launched and retrieved from the stern helipad.

Turgutreis has led a relatively quiet service life since inception. However, as the hull life of the class continues to show wear-and-tear after decades of service on the high seas, the class as a whole is expected to be succeeded by the incoming Istanbul-class guided-missile frigate design detailed elsewhere on the Military Factory.
