The TF-100-class is a modern Turkish Navy initiative seeking to add a collection of four guided-missile frigates to be led by TCG Istanbul. Istanbul saw her keel laid down on January 19th, 2017 with an expected launch-to-sea date sometime in 2021. Her commissioning date is set to be scheduled as of this writing (December 2017). The class is an outgrowth of the MILGEM national warship program pushed by the Turkish government and includes the Ada-class corvettes detailed elsewhere on this site.

The TF-100-class frigates are set to superseded the Cold War -era G-class frigates which are nothing more than modernized Turkish Navy variants of the original American Navy Oliver Hazard Perry-class ships.

The frigate, detailed as a multi-mission guided-missile frigate intended for patrolling and deterrence, is being designed to a 3,300 ton standard with an overall length of 371.4 feet, a beam of 47.2 feet and a draught of 13.2 feet. The relatively shallow draught will allow the vessel to operate close-to-shore in support of land forces. The propulsion scheme is set to become a mixed arrangement involving a single gas turbine and a pair of diesels driving 2 x shafts under stern. Maximum speed is estimated at 29 knots with a range out to 7,560 miles. The crew complement numbers a modest total of 125 personnel made up of officers and enlisted (as well as aircrew).

Intended armament will include 1 x 76mm OTO-Melara turreted deck set over the forecastle with 2 x 25mm Aselsan STOP chain guns and 1 x Close-In Weapon System (CIWS). The warship will also carry 2 x 324mm (13") torpedo double torpedo tube launchers. The missile-oriented component of the armament suite includes Harpoon anti-ship missiles (16 reloads) and an Mk 41 Vertical Launch System (VLS) for a stock of 21 Rolling Airframe Missiles (RAMs). Over the stern will be a combination hanger/helicopter flight deck to service up to 2 x Sikorsky S-70B Seahawk (or similar) medium-lift helicopters equipped for the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) role. An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) launching and retrieval capability has also been mentioned.

it is expected that the warship will utilize all manner of current stealth techniques across her hull and superstructure (including low profile smoke funnels and an enclosed mast). Hull-mounted and variable depth sonar fits also figure into the design as does modern digital processing systems for searching, tracking and engagement (fire control).
