ROKS Lee Sunsin (SSK-068) serves the modern South Korean Navy (the "Republic of Korea Navy") as part of the nine-strong Chang Bogo-class of diesel-electric-powered attack submarines. The group began commissioning in 1993 with lead ship Chang Bogo (SSK-061) . Lee Sunsin (SSK-068) joined her sisters in 2000. The class design serves both the South Korean Navy as well as the navy of Indonesia (three boats), the latter recognized as an improved version of the base class design.

Lee Sunsin displaces up to 1,400 tons and showcases a running length of 184 feet, a beam of 21 feet and a draught of 18 feet. Internally, there is a complement of thirty-three arranged in watches and formed from a mix of officers and enlisted personnel. Outwardly, the boat utilizes tried-and-true attack submarine design lines with smooth contours, a sail set amidships, and a finned tail section.

The boat is conventionally-powered through a hybrid arrangement of diesel turbines and electric motors. There are 4 x MTU (German-originated) Type 8V396 SE diesel engines for surfaced travel and 1 x Siemens electric motor generating 5,000 horsepower for submerged travel work. Both systems drive power to a single shaft astern. Surfaced speeds reach 11 knots while the vessel can make headway at over 21 knots when submerged. Range is out to 11,000 nautical miles when surfaced and 400 nautical miles when submerged. It can stay at sea for some fifty total days before requiring refueling / resupply and reach depths down to 1,600 feet.

The armament suite is 8 x 21" (530mm) torpedo tubes with 14 x SUT torpedo reloads carried. It is also cleared to fire the American-made UGM-84 "Harpoon" Anti-Ship Missile (ASM) against surface targets at range.
