Both the Mexican and Israeli navies operate the Sa'ar 4.5-class missile boats built by Israel Shipyards Limited. One of the group for the Israeli Navy is INS Kidon, rebuilt from the old components of the original INS Kidon (Sa'ar 4-class) series boat using the newer Sa'ar 4.5-class series hull. The revamped INS Kidon was commissioned for service in 1997 and maintains an active status as of this writing (2016).

As built the vessel displaces 430 tonnes under standard loads and 488 tonnes under full loads. Her dimensions include an overall length of 202.4 feet, a beam of 25 feet and a draught down to 9.2 feet. Power is from 4 x MTU 16V 396 TB91 diesel marine units outputting 16,000 horsepower to 4 x shafts. Maximum speed in ideal conditions is 34 knots with a range out to 4,800 nautical miles.

On board, INS Kidon carries a modest crew of 53 officers and sailors. There is a single Rigid-Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) for insertion/extraction and interceptor sorties. The boat is outfitted with the Elta ELM/M-2218S series air-search radar system as well as the Elta EL/M-2221 Fire Control radar. Elbit supplies the chaff rocket launchers and Rafael brings along its RF corner reflector/wireless jammer. The Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) is from Elisra and is the NS-9003A/9005 series fit.

In terms of armament, Kidon carries a 76mm OTO-Melara turreted naval gun and this is backed by 8 x RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles and 16 x Barak 1 surface-to-air missiles allowing the ship to tackle both seaborne and airborne threats within range. For close-in defense there is a 20mm Phalanx system (at the forecastle), 2 x 12.7mm Browning heavy machine guns and up to 3 x 7.62mm FN MAG 58 series medium machine guns.

Her profile is such that the main gun armament is seated over stern (and not the bow as is traditionally seen) with the Phalanx unit set over the bow. The bridge is well ahead of midships and the semi-enclosed mast is directly aft of this structure. Most of the structural mass is forward of midships with the rest of the deck surface taken up by various smaller structures including the missile launchers.

Providing speed, agility and good on-call firepower, the INS Kidon becomes a true multirole asset to the Israeli Navy in the volatile waters of the Mediterranean.
