HNLMS Friesland (P842) is an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) currently (2021) serving under the flag of the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN). It belongs to the Holland-class OPV group which numbers four in all - the three other ships making up the class are lead-ship Holland (P840)and sister ships Zeeland (P841) with Groningen (P843). The class was laid down by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in Romanian waters (Galati) for the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN) and began entering commissioned service in 2012.

Friesland was laid down on November 26th, 2009 and formally launched on November 4th, 2010. She entered commissioned service on January 22nd, 2013 and continues to actively operate today.

As built, the warship displaces at 3,750 tons under full load and features a running length of 355 feet, 7 inches, a beam of 52 feet, 5 inches, and a draught down to 14 feet, 11 inches. The shallow draught gives the vessel the inherent ability to operate near shorelines. Installed power encompasses 2 x MAN 12V28/33D series marine diesel engines driving the warship to speeds of over 21 knots. Range is out to 5,000 nautical miles while the ship can remain at sea for a period of 21 days.

Aboard is an operating crew of 54 with ample spacing to add another forty or so personnel/passengers. The OPV also carries a pair of Fast Raiding Interception and Special Forces Craft (FRISC) as well as a single Fast Rescue Boat (FRB). Over the stern of the craft is space for a single NHIndustries NH90 navalized/maritime helicopter providing an Over-the-Horizon (OtH) capability and aiding in Search and Rescue (SAR) sorties as needed. The helipad is attached to a hangar area offering enhanced support facilities for the rotorcraft (up to medium-class size).

HNLMS Friesland is equipped with all-modern sensors and processing systems. This includes the "SeaMaster 400" air-search radar, the "SeaWatcher 100" active phased array surface-search-and-tracking radar, and the "Gatekeeper" Electro-Optical (EO) surveillance unit.

In terms of armament, the ship is quipped for multiple mission types close-to-shore. This is led by 1 x 76mm OTO-Melara "Super Rapid" turreted deck gun backed by 1 x 30mm OTO-Melara "Marlin" weapon system. In addition to this are up to 2 x 12.7mm OTO-Melara "Hitrole" NT heavy machine guns and up to 6 x 7.62mm FN MAG General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs).

Friesland began making headlines in April of 2012 when she was part of the rescue operation near Iona involving a sail training vessel. In November of 2015, she joined the United States Coast Guard in seizing cocaine in Caribbean waters (the operation fell under Dutch command) and again in September of 2018. In March 2016, she stood as a show of force / deterrent against the destroyer warship Vice-Admiral Kulakov of the Russian Navy as it transited near Dutch territory.
