The modern Chinese Navy - formally designated the "People's Liberation Army Navy" (PLAN) - continues to grow by leaps and bounds as the nation asserts more and more pressure on its regional rivals concerning the South China Sea. The service is made up of many different ship types, its structure comparable to offerings in the West including the United States. Corvettes make up part of the powerful surface combatant line and one of the type is embodied by the "Type 056" corvette class, made up of a large collection of standardized missile-carrying warships.

Among their number is CNS Xinyang (501), a guided-missile corvette warship useful in general patrolling actions as well as airspace deterrent and anti-ship measures. The warship was commissioned for service in 2015 and built to a 1,440 ton standard and currently makes it presence known as part of the North Sea Fleet.

The Type 056 corvettes measure 90 meters long with a beam of 11 meters and a draught of just 4 meters. This sort of compactness allows corvette types to operate close to shore and patrol key waterways when needed. Some sixty of the class are planned for the PLAN while over forty currently make up the available stock.

The vessels are propelled by 2 x SEMT Pielstick PA6-STC diesel motors driving power to 2 x Shafts under stern. The ships make headway at speeds of up to 25 knots in ideal conditions and can range out to 3,500 nautical miles.

Aboard is a crew complement of about seventy-eight personnel. Bow and towed sonar arrays are both carried and a Type 347G radar suite makes up the primary processing house. A single navalized helicopter can operated from the stern helipad and adds an over-the-horizon anti-ship / anti-submarine measure for the vessel.

Structurally, the ship follows established modern-day design with its sleek, stealth-centric lines. The forecastle is relatively unobstructed save for the deck gun and the hull superstructure is stepped towards the bridge and enclosed mast works. The entire vessel utilizes a relatively low profile and its smoke funnels follow suite while being of an enclosed design themselves. The funnels are located at midships, aft of the main mast, and lead the aft-hull superstructure which connects to the single-helicopter helipad. Additional sensors, radar, and weaponry are seated over the aft-hull superstructure. The sides of the hull are slabs with the hull line running the length of the ship.

Armament is a mix of projectile- and missile-based solutions led by the single 76mm AK-176 series turreted deck gun over the forecastle. There are 2 x 30mm Automatic cannons featured as well as 2 x 2-cell YJ-83 anti-ship missile launchers and a single 8-cell FL-3000N Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) launcher. Beyond this are 2 x 324mm torpedo tubes in triple-tube configuration.
