The Admiral Kasatonov is a guided-missile frigate serving the modern Russian Navy. The warship belongs to the relatively new Admiral Gorshkov-class currently (2019) comprised of six ships with fifteen total planned. Kasatonov is the second ship of the class, built by Severnaya Verf in Saint Petersburg with the keel laid down on November 26th, 2009. She was launched on December 12th, 2014 and was formally commissioned in 2019. She is assigned to the Northern Fleet.

The guided-missile frigate, by modern standards, is a relatively compact warship laden with advanced processing systems and a broad range of weaponry. The types are designed to operate independently or as part of the main fighting fleet in Blue Water scenarios close-to and far-from home. All major naval powers rely on the multi-mission approach that frigates currently offer.

Kasatonov holds an operating crew of 210 men and is stocked with the Furke-4 SP-27 main radar unit, Poliment 5P-20K active phased array radar unit, the Zarya-M sonar fit, and all-modern Fire-Control Systems (FCSs). Electronic Warfare is covered through the Prosvet-M suite as well as three distinct decoy systems.

Armament includes 1 x 130mm A-192M "Amethyst" / "Arsenal" turreted main gun over the forecastle backed by several Vertical Launch Systems (VLSs) containing air-to-surface, anti-ship, and land-attack cruise missiles. 2 x Kashtan systems provide accurate Close-In defense and there are up to 2 x 14.5mm MTPU Heavy Machine Guns (HMGs) to defend against approaching targets closer than what the Kashtan units provide. Additionally, the vessel carries 330mm torpedo launchers in twin quadruple mounts to counter threats on the water and under it.

To this is added an Over-the-Horizon (OtH) capability by way of a Kamov Ka-27 (or similar) navy helicopter. Up to two can be carried, one internally in the provided full-service hangar, and another exposed on the stern-based helipad. The helicopters are readily-equipped for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) sorties and can cover other roles as needed - Search and Rescue (SAR), spotting and reconnaissance, at-sea resupply, and anti-ship.

Her design lines are consistent with modern warship offerings: slab-sides are used to elegantly blend the hull with the superstructure and protrusions are kept to a minimum to reduce the ship's signature. The forward and rear superstructure components are one singular section met at midships by the low-profile smoke funnel. The mast over the frontal part of the superstructure is fully enclosed and of a low-profile design. The bridge section gives a commanding view to all forward-facing portions of the ship. Over the stern is the aforementioned combination helipad/stern area for the launching and retrieval of a helicopter.

Internally, power is from a COmbined Gas-And-Gas (COGAG) arrangement which sees 2 x Gas turbines coupled with 2 x Gas turbines to cover both general cruising actions and high-speed dashes, maximizing fuel efficiency in the process. Range is a useful 4,000 nautical miles and speeds can reach up to 20 knots in ideal conditions.

Dimensions include a running length of 442.9 feet with a beam measuring 52.5 feet and a draught of 14.8 feet.

As of this writing (2019), the Gorshkov-class consists of lead-ship Admiral Gorshkov and sister-ship Kasatonov. Under construction are Admiral Golovko, Admiral Isakov, Admiral Ameilko, and Admiral Chichagov. Commissioning of Golovko, Isakov, Amelko, and Chichagov are expected in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025, respectively.
