    Date Authorized: February 4th, 1944

    Ribbon Colors: white; blue; red

    Description (Ribbon):

    Thin white stripe to thick read band; at center are thin white-to-blue-to-white stripes; other end of ribbon repeats this pattern in reverse fashion.

    Description (Medal):

    Five pointed bronze star medal suspended from ribbon by a rectangular loop with rounded corners; at center of star is another smaller five-pointed star; rays emanate from this smaller star out towards the medal edges; REVERSE: At center is a circle that contains the space for the recipient's name; encircling the space are the words "Heroic or Meritorious Achievement".

    Award Criteria:

    Awarded to any persons having served in or with the United States military after December 6th, 1941 and having distinguished themselves through heroism or meritorious service (sans those participating in aerial flight) against an enemy of the United States; includes military operations against an opposing foreign body or having served alongside friendly forces of the United States in armed opposition against an enemy; may be awarded to those whose heroism is deemed a lesser degree than that as required for the awarding of the Silver Star; may also be given to personnel for single acts of heorism and meritorious service when deemed less than that required for the Legion of Merit.
