World War 1 saw the origins of the 'Landship', which became the 'tank' as we know it today - with much thanks to British engineering out of Bovington, England.
World War 1 marked the first-use of the tank as a combat system, replacing cavalry in the role of punching through the enemy's defenses. Trench warfare and machine gun fire necessitated this battlefield evolution. The first tank-versus-tank battle occurred between the British and Germans but is largely viewed as inconclusive as neither side could claim a clear victory.
