Tanks Used by the Germans in World War I

Military History | The Great War

Ironically, it would be the Germans that were slow to appreciate the value of the armored fighting vehicle - the tank - a mistake that would not be repeated in the Second World War.

The German Empire's primary tank design of World War 1 became the cumbersome A7V system which weighed 36 tons (short) and featured a crew of eighteen. Armament was through a single 57mm main gun backed by no fewer than six machine guns about the various facings of the hull superstructure. While about 100 of the type were ordered in early-1917, only twenty or so of this total were available before the Armistice of November 1918. Beyond the A7V model, there were other tank projects considered, some seriously. Should the war have progressed beyond Christmas of 1918, some of these systems may very well have seen deployment in the bloody and long-running War of the Empires.
