The Tokchon is a mobile, self-propelled tracked artillery piece developed by local North Korean military industry. The type mates various Soviet-era direct-fire towed field guns and indirect-fire field howitzers to the Soviet ATS-59 series tracked chassis to make up an entire family of Self-Propelled Guns (SPGs). The 14-ton ATS-59 itself is an artillery tractor from the Cold War period (1947-1989) and was used extensively by Soviet forces for decades as a prime mover, its tracks allowing the vehicle to cut across country easily enough while also keeping pace with the main fighting force.

The tractor component held its operating crew in a side-by-side seating arrangement at a forward-set cab over the bow. The rear, therefore was free to haul all manner of goods for Soviet ground forces. The track system consisted of five rubber-tired roadwheels with the drive sprocket at front and the track idler at rear. No track-return rollers were featured in the arrangement.

The ATS-59 series was eventually superseded by the AT-S model which offered greater performance.

The various gun mounts fitted to the North Korean Tokchon development include the 100mm BS-3, the 122mm D-74, the 130mm D-46, and the 152mm D-20 - all detailed elsewhere on the Military Factory. These are designated rather plainly in the North Korean inventory as M-1972, M-1981, M-1975, and M-1974, respectively. The M-1978 is centered on 2 x 37mm autocannons and used in the air-defense / airspace deterrence role while the M-1991 features the SM-4-1 coastal gun for maximum destructive power.

It is known that Houthi forces in Yemen have used the North Korean Tokchon weapon system in the fighting with Saudi Arabia.©MilitaryFactory.com
