Proving popular with many modern armies of the world is the very-mobile gun carrier - wheeled vehicles (as opposed to tracked) sporting powerful field howitzers for Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) artillery support fire. The nation of Ukraine, still embroiled in a war to its East with neighboring Russia, introduced, in 2018, one such design designated locally as the 2S22 "Bohdana". The type is used solely by Ukrainian Ground Forces.

The system is a mating of the KrAZ-6322 series diesel-fueled truck chassis and a proven 155mm field howitzer gun system. The former comes complete with armoring at the vital sections (the crew cabin in particular) while the latter brings along with it the necessary traversal, elevation, and recoil gear for effective battlefield performance. Such designs are intended to supply forward-operating forces with rear-line fire support and the truck component allows for quick relocation of the entire weapon as needed.

Design work on the vehicle spanned from 2015 to 2018. It was publically debuted in the 2018 Kiev Independence Day Parade.

The complete system is crewed by five personnel that includes the driver and commander. It weighs 56,000lb loaded for travel. The truck component of the 2S22 is of conventional arrangement with the engine set at the bow and the driving cab/crew cab seated directly aft. The middle-to-rear section of the truck is of a flatbed design allowing the gun system to be placed directly onto it. The installed diesel engine unit is rated between 380 and 420 horsepower output and provides the truck with an on-road driving range of about 1,200 kilometers (745 miles).

The gun portion of the S2SS retains all of the capable elements of a modern 155mm field howitzer. It sports a long gun tube with a heavy-duty, multi-baffled brake at its business end. The weapon is rated for 4 to 8 rounds-per-minute sustained and has a reach out to 40 kilometers. This is considerably broadened with Rocket-Assisted Projectiles (RAPs), offering engagement ranges out to an impressive 60 kilometers. Up to 20 ready-to-fire projectiles are carried on the truck itself, additional reloads requiring an accompanying ammunition carrier.©MilitaryFactory.com
