Every major frontline fighting force fields some form of the 155mm artillery piece as it is a widely accepted , and proven caliber across many conflicts. Nexter of France produces one such piece, the "TRAJAN", a 155mm /52 caliber towed in-direct fire field howitzer for use by army forces. The TRAJAN is billed as a reliable and powerful battlefield piece with modern components designed to meet any customer requirement. It is based on the strengths of the TR-F1 towed artillery piece and the main gun fitted to the CAESAR self-propelled vehicle platform (detailed elsewhere on this site) in service with the modern French Army.
The TRAJAN is a complete 13-ton combat system that is made air-transportable in the belly of a heavy-lift hauler such as the Airbus A400M "Atlas" and Boeing C-17 "Globemaster III". When moved by air, the TRAJAN is transported as a whole unit and is ready-to-deploy as a single piece when landed with only the typical preparation required of the crew. When made ready for transportation by mover vehicle, the wheeled split-trail carried of the weapon can sustain road speeds of up to 80 kmh and off-road speeds reaching 30 kmh. The crew numbers six men and can have the gun system arranged, ready-to-fire in 1.5 minutes.
The weapon is cleared to fire NATO-standard 155mm projectiles (155mm 39/52 caliber NATO) and "smart" ammunition as needed. It can sustain a rate-of-fire up to 45 rounds for every thirty-minutes out to ranges of 42 kilometers (using Extended Range, Full Bore - ERFB - projectiles). The reloading action is sped up by having complete expendable casings so there are no spent casings to eject from the breech. The complete TRAJAN system includes a ballistics computer for accurized fire at range as well as a Muzzle Velocity Radar (MVR) system and ammunition handling crane.
The TRAJAN gun system is being actively marketed to the Indian Army, the service seeking their next 155mm artillery piece through the "Towed Gun System" (TGS) program.
