The Jaguar EBRC ("Engin Blinde de Reconnaissance et de Combat") by Nexter has been selected as the direct successor to the aging AMX 10RC, ERC 90 "Sagaie" and VAB "HOT" wheeled armored vehicles. The Jaguar follows suit as a multi-role wheeled design and will become available to the French Army in number beginning in 2020 with deliveries expected to end in 2025. The French Army is scheduled to take on some 248 Jaguar vehicles in all. The design is a joint effort between Nexter, Renault Trucks and Thales.
The Jaguar shares roughly 70% commonality of parts witht he VBMR Griffon multi-role wheeled vehicle - which is also being adopted by the French Army.
Structurally the Jaguar is given a very high ground clearance and angled hull floor. This aids in cross-country travel as well as blast deflection. The hull features angled plates for some base ballistics protection while the glacis plate is nearly horizontal (armor protection is up to STANAG level 4). The driver is seated at front-center along the glacis plate with thick, bullet-resistant vision blocks. The turret has faceted panels with the main gun protruding from its frontal face. Roof hatches provide for situational awareness as well as entry-exit of the turret crew. The turret crew consists of the vehicle commander (left) and the dedicated gunner (right). Day/night vision as well as an NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) systems will be standard fittings.
The combat weight of the vehicle is in the 25,000 kilogram range.
The Jaguar is armed by way of a turreted 40mm CTA International automatic cannon with a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun installation. The weapons suite will also have standardized support for French Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) for dealing with armored threats at range. The complete suite includes stabilization for firing on-the-move and panoramic sights for exceptional situational awareness. A full digital system will make up the control scheme of the weapons fit that will also allow for program of "smart" projectiles. The roof is also home to a Remote Weapon Station (RWS) fitting an additional 7.62mm machine gun that can be fired from within the protective confines of the Jaguar's hull.
Self-defense systems will include an Infra-Red/radio jammer and laser warning unit as well as electronically-actuated smoke grenade dischargers. The grenades are fitted in two banks of four grenades each along the frontal turret sides. Additional grenades are mounted at the rear hull facing.
Power is from an unnamed diesel unit driving all three axles. The first pair of wheels are steerable. Operational range of the vehicle is about 800 kilometers.
