Keeping up with changes to modern armored fighting doctrine, the Chinese military has invested in an 8x8 wheeled tank destroyer through its "ST1" initiative. The vehicle provides an air-transportable, fully-amphibious military vehicle with inherently strong off-road performance and on-road function. The lightly-armored chassis features a fully-powered turret mounting the proven 105mm tank gun. The ST1 continues the current Chinese trend towards more independence on its military hardware and joins several other vehicles either entering service or in-development. The Chinese are long-time customers of Russia but have grown to develop their own serviceable military industry in the past decades in concert with its growing world influence. The ST1 vehicle is manufactured under the Poly Technologies, Incorporated brand name.

The ST1 is a member of the modular-minded ZBL-09 8x8 wheeled vehicle family detailed elsewhere on this site.

Imagery of the ST1 showcases what appears to be a largely conventional 8x8 chassis with a very shallow glacis plate and basic ballistics protection. The chassis is said to be from the ZBL-09 family of wheeled vehicles allowing the ST1 to share basic automotive components with the origin product and its fleet of variants. The drive mans a position at the front left of the hull with the assumption being that the powerpack lies to his left. This opens the middle-rear section of the for installation of the turret, ammunition stores, armament, and fighting compartment. Along with the driver, the crew numbers four in all and includes a commander, driver, and loader. A coaxial 7.62mm machine if featured alongside the main gun while a 12.7mm machine gun is fitted at a hatch on the turret roof to contend with low-flying aerial threats and light armored vehicles. Smoke grenade dischargers are sported along each side of the turret to protect the vehicle's maneuvers.
