Daimler Trucks (North America) developed the M915A5 Line Haul Track Truck to fulfill a United States Army requirement for a heavy hauler. It is a 6x4 wheels system intended to move heavy container systems from dock to operating areas inland. The M915A5 is an "up-armored" version of the original M915A3, the new form brought about from convoy experience in both the Afghanistan and Iraqi theaters of war. Evaluation of the M1915A5 pilot vehicle occurred in September of 2009 and ranged into early 2010. An original order for 1,780 trucks was placed with Daimler in October of 2009 and deliveries began in September of the following year. It is expected that some 290,000 trucks will eventually be procured for U.S. Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard service.
The overall configuration of this truck is conventional with a front-mounted engine, mid-set cab, and open rear chassis section. Fuel tanks are stored under and aft of the driving cabin and a single spare wheel is featured under the vehicle. The engine compartment is given a slatted grille design and upward sloping hood. Windscreens and side windows thick and protect the occupants against small arms fire and artillery spray but little else. A Meritor-Wabco system attempts to protect against rollover accidents. The truck features a front axle with two wheels and a rear double-axle approach with eight wheels total. Turning radius is 51.6 feet.
The M915A5 is powered by a Detroit Diesel S60 series diesel-fueled engine of 500 horsepower output. This system is mated to an Allison 4500SP 6-speed automatic transmission. The six-wheeled design features suspension across its front (flat leaf) and rear (Freightliner TurfTrac Suspension) axles for basic ride comfort.
The driving cab is outfitted with a heat/air conditioning/venting system for environmental comfort in nearly any operating area. The steering column is given a tilting/telescoping feature for some driver customizability. An Eaton VORAD VS400 serves in the collision warning system role. Low-light driving is assisted through front LED headlamps, LED tailights, and Daytime Running Lights (DRLs).
The M915A5 sports a cruising range out to 600 miles on its internal 120 gallon fuel tank at speeds of 40 miles per hour. Maximum road speed is 65 miles per hour on paved surfaces. Ground clearance (9.5 inches) allows for some obstacle crossing as the vehicle can ford up to 20 inch depths.
