With the United States and Britain heavily embroiled in the war fronts of Afghanistan and Iraq during the 2000s and 2010s, there proved a growing need for light armored, mobile tactical vehicles capable of withstanding IEDs, mines, and guerilla-style attacks in unforgiving environments. This gave rise to a plethora of armored trucks recognized as "Mine-Resistant, Ambush-Protected" (MRAP) vehicles with "V-shaped" hulls, blast-resistant seating and windscreens, and oversized / run-flat road wheels. One entry into the mix became the International MXT-MV ("Military Extreme Truck - Military Version") emerging from Navistar Defense (of Navistar International) of the United States.

The truck saw design work undertaken in 2005 and series introduction began in 2006. While not taken into service by the United States Army (the Oshkosh "M-ATV" was selected instead and is detailed elsewhere on this site), the British Army adopted the new type as the "Husky" in 2009. Production of the vehicle has been ongoing since 2006 with several notable variants marketed since.

Dimensionally, the basic vehicle form has a running length up to 6.8 meters with a beam of 2.43 and a height to hull roof of 2.36. These qualities allow the truck to be airlifted in the hold of a Lockheed C-130 "Hercules" tactical transport aircraft or similar. Internally, the cabin seats the driver as well as ten combat-ready personnel. Power is from a single International VT-365 diesel-fueled engine mated to an Allison 2500 SP transmission system. With its 4x4 wheeled, fully-suspended arrangement, the vehicle can reach out to a range of 400 miles. Armor protection is variable, going beyond basic ballistics protection to more varied arrangements to better counter the threats of the modern battlefield (by way of add-on armor kits).

The standard, unarmored form is the "MXT-MV". The "MXT-MVA" supports armor add-on kits and was developed with assistance from Israeli-based armored vehicle-maker Plasan. The "Husky TSV" is the "MXT-MVA" modified to suit British Army requirements of the late 2000s. The M-ATV has a new chassis with Navistar-designed protection scheme.

The British Army contracted for 262 trucks in an original 2009 batch. This was then strengthened through a follow-up 89-strong order in 2010. In June of 2022, the British began sending the Ukrainian Army a stock of its existing Husky trucks to bolster the Ukrainian defense against Russia.
