The Ta 154 Moskito ("Mosquito") was another product of the Focke-Wulf aircraft design firm operating for the Third Reich. The design was classified as a night fighter and appeared most promising until a series of delays and losses to the first two production aircraft effectively canceled any other future orders. As such, the Ta 154 remained a study into the Luftwaffe aircraft of the "What Might Have Been" mold.

The Ta 154 was of a twin-engine design, fielded with Junkers Jumo 211F 12-cylinder inverted-Vee liquid-cooled engines driving three-blade propellers. The fuselage was of a most basic design with a single rudder element in the tail section. A basic landing gear assembly was used and the as much of the aircraft as possible was constructed of wood to counter the low supplies of valuable wartime metals. Crew accommodations amounted to two, a pilot and a radio-operator to his rear. Armament was impressive, with twin 30mm MK108 cannons and twin 20mm MG151 cannons mounted on either side of the fuselage. Additionally, the Ta 154 Moskito was fitted with a single 30mm cannon in the upper part of the fuselage and was of the MK108 variety.

The Ta 154 did achieve operational status albeit in a severely limited capacity, operating with at least two German air groups. Nevertheless, the system suffered from the drawbacks inherent in fighting a losing war. As such, the potential of the Ta 154 Moskito system would never be realized.©MilitaryFactory.com
