The G280 twin-engine business jet (BizJet) is an extension of the earlier G200 series of 1999. As born, the original aircraft carried the name "Astra Galaxy" and was jointly developed by Israeli Aircraft Industries (IAI) and Yakovlev (as the "Astra") while later featuring involvement from European defense powerhouse EADS. The design incorporated sweptback wing mainplanes, side-by-side seating cockpit, mid-mounted horizontal tailplanes set about a single vertical fin, and outboard-held non-afterburning turbofan engines. Two-hundred fifty of the type were sold.

The G280 was developed in the mid-2000s as an improved form of the G200 and itself was originally known as the Model G250. A first-flight was recorded on December 11th, 2009 in Israel and 2011 saw the official designation change to G280. The design proved successful leading to type certification forthcoming in 2011-2012 and formal service entry followed thereafter.

The joint partnership between Gulfstream and Israel continues, leading the aircraft to be build in Israel and shipped in a near-finalized form to Gulfstream facilities in the United States where the airframes are given their paint schemes and attention to internal detailing.

At its core, the G280 retains much of the form-and-function of the original Astra and G200 series offerings. The same arrangement is kept, including the low-mounted sweptback mainplanes (of all-new-design) and outboard engine pairing. The cockpit features a sloping nose assembly offering excellent vision for the two pilots. The tail configuration is changed in that the horizontal planes are fitted much higher, following the proven Multhopp "T-tail" standard. Ground running is accomplished through a conventional, retractable tricycle undercarriage.

Internally, the cockpit is dominated by three large, full-color displays showcasing all pertinent flight information. The crew are divided by a center console housing throttle controls and other systems within easy reach by both personnel. Side stick controls compliment the redundant yoke scheme - allowing either pilot to take control of the aircraft as needed. Beyond the crew of two, the aircraft carries up to ten passengers in luxury comfort. Individual seating and bench seating are offered as is a complete galley and restroom facilities.

Dimensions include a running length of 66.9 feet, a wingspan of 63 feet, and a height of 21.3 feet. Empty weight reaches 24,150lb against an MTOW of 40,000lb.

Installed power are 2 x Honeywell HTF7250G air-breathing turbofan engines offering 7,625lb of thrust each. This provides the aircraft with a top speed of Mach 0.84, cruising at a comfortable 530 miles-per-hour. Range is out to 3,600 nautical miles and its service ceiling reaches 45,000 feet.

In the civilian airspace marketplace, the G280 is designed to compete directly with such offerings as the American Cessna "Citation X+" and "Longitude" lines, the Canadian Bombardier "Challenger 350", and the Brazilian Embraer "Legacy" series.

The G280 has appealed to government services as well, used to ferry VIP, while some are outfitted for military service covering the Electronic Warfare (EW) role.©MilitaryFactory.com
