Small profile "quad rotor" remote-controlled air vehicles are the current rage in Unmanned Air Systems (UASs) - even beyond military use - for both law enforcement and civilian market sectors have grown fond of such vehicles. Compact quad rotors provide a relatively low-cost, easily manageable, portable aerial scouting solution able to fulfill many important in-the-field applications. Lockheed Martin produces the all-weather Quad Indago Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Quad Rotor geared towards military service and law enforcement with inherent qualities suitable for operation in the tight confines of modern day urban environments.

Lightweight quad copters like Quad Indago allow for hovering aerial reconnaissance/scouting within a field dominated by many large, fixed-wing products - products that can only overfly or loiter around areas of interest. The Quad Indago is outfitted with a 360-degree traversable, hot-swappable gimbal mount with active camera stabilization allowing the system to field various payloads including an Electro-Optical (EO) camera with 10x zoom, an InfraRed (IR) sensor with FLIR, and a Laser Illuminator (LI) unit. Additionally there is support for commercial off-the-shelf equipment provided by leading industry manufactures. Flight is assisted by way of the Kestrel 3 series autopilot system and Quad Indago features an endurance window of 40 minutes with a Line-of-Sight (LoS) range out to 10 kilometers. The operator controls the aircraft through a hand-held wireless unit while an optional full-service Ground Control Station (GCS) - complete with 3D map interface - is available for more robust mission options and vehicle control.

Due to its collapsible design, Quad Indago can be easily transported and its tool-less makeup means deployment is completed within minutes upon arrival. Dimensions of the UAS include a length of 32 inches with a width of 32 inches and a height of 7 inches. When folded, the system takes on a minimal profile measuring 12x9x6 inches. Overall weight is just 5 lb.©MilitaryFactory.com
