The Saab E-2000 "Erieye" is the Swedish-developed Saab Erieye Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) system integrated into the Saab 2000 twin-turboprop regional airliner. The aircraft is tasked with being the active "eyes in the sky" for various air services of the world including Pakistan (6) and Saudi Arabia (2). The Saab 2000 platform also forms the basis of the "Airtracer" SIGnals INTelligence (SIGINT) and MPA - Maritime Patrol Aircraft - variants.

The commercial Saab 2000 form - developed from the preceding Saab 340 twin-turboprop design of 1984 - was first-flown on March 26th, 1992 and introduced into service on August 30th, 1994. With production ranging from 1992 to 1999 some 63 total examples were made by Swedish industry. The design has proven highly adaptable for other industries including military and has since been modified to suit a variety of over-battlefield requirements.

The Erieye version of this aircraft retains the original's design arrangement of two turboprop engines making its overall performance quite similar. Changes to the airframe, however, are readily apparent as various structures and outcroppings have been added to better the suit the aircraft to its reworked role. The chief physical characteristic is the bar-like structure, the Erieye radar, mounted atop supports along the dorsal line of the fuselage. Beyond this is the integrated Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system, protected voice and data-link communications, and self-defense / countermeasures qualities. The fuselage houses five multi-role mission consoles manned by specially-trained operators while the cockpit retains its two-crew side-by-side seating arrangement.

Beyond this, the aircraft continues to carry its multi-bladed turboprop engines in streamlined nacelles at each wing mainplane member, has a retractable tricycle undercarriage for ground-running, and sports a single vertical tail fin with upward-cranked horizontal tailplanes.
