The modern United States Navy carrier air wing is comprised of a mix of fixed-wing and rotary-wing elements led by the Boeing F/A-18E/F 'Super Hornet' fleet defense / strike fighter in both single-seat and twin-seat forms. This is backed by special-mission aircraft designed for specific roles including Electronic Warfare (EW), Search & Rescue (SAR), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Airborne Early Warning (AEW), and Fleet Logistics Support. Altogether, modern American carriers can house, launch, and retrieve around ninety total aircraft.
1) Typical mix involves 12 x F/A-18F "Super Hornet" twin-seat models with 36 x F/A-18E "Super Hornet" single-seaters. Alternative mix is F/A-18E with F/A-18C "Hornet" models.
