The Independence-class serves the modern United States Navy in the littoral combat ship role - carrying a multi-mission-minded set of equipment and armament. The class, developed along the lines of a high-speed trimaran, operates alongside the other LCS group, the Freedom-class, which take on more conventional stealth warship shapes.
