Dreadnoughts (Navy Ships)

Naval Warfare | Military History

The arrival of the HMS Dreadnought brought about a whole new era in warship design - leading to the general term 'Dreadnought' used to describe these vessels.

The Dreadnought Battleship revolution was begun by the arrival in 1906 of HMS Dreadnought of the British Royal Navy. Its arrival was such that all existing battleships were then recognized as 'pre-Dreadnought' types, making them largely obsolete in comparison. The HMS Dreadnought became the first warship of the period to focus on an all 'big gun' armament across its main gun installations while relying exclusively on turbine propulsion for the necessary speed. The revolution in shipbuilding that followed the arrival of HMS Dreadnought resulted in all-new greater designs of considerably more strength, power and firepower - making the Dreadnought an obsolete vessel itself in a short five years. Some Dreadnoughts were still in service during World War 2 (1939-1945) though many would be given up after World War 1 (1914-1918).
