Battle of Midway Ships

Naval Warfare History | Second World War

The Battle of Midway was a crucial defeat for the Imperial Japanese Navy as losses mounted and the stout defenders held on.

The Battle of Midway was fought from June 4th until June 7th, 1942 between the United States and the Empire of Japan. It took place at the Midway Atoll as part of the Pacific Theater of World War 2 (1939-1945)and became one of the critical battles of all of the Second World War for both sides. This early major and decisive American victory turned the course of the Pacific War in favor of the Allies as the fighting ultimately claimed no fewer than four of the attacker's aircraft carriers and nearly 250 enemy aircraft. The Americans managed a stout defense of the Atoll largely due to code-breaking the Japanese intent. Taking place just six months after the events at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the Battle of Midway was the American revenge of the surprise attack from December 1941 that brought the two nations into open war. For their attempt, the Japanese never recovered the manpower and material goods lost in this short-lived assault.
