The AKSU-74 is a shortened version of the AKS series assault rifle. By Staff Writer
The AKSU-74 represents a submachine gun derivative of the AKS assault rifle, both operating with the 5.45mm Soviet cartridge. The AKSU-74 is a shortened version of the assault rifle and features a compact overall design, foldable butt-stock and a 30-round detachable plastic box magazine. Knowledge of the submachine form reached Western sources in 1983, during which the system was fielded against Afghan guerillas in the Soviet-Afghan War.
Though borrowing many of the key features of the AKS assault rifle design, the smaller design of such a large and powerful rifle necessitates the need for additional compensation to be introduced. As such, the AKSU-74 features distinct flash hider is attached to the short barrel. An expansion chamber has been fitted to the system in an attempt to tone down the recoil. The butt is collapsible in that it can fold sideways alongside the weapon's body when not in use, affording the gun its compact identity.
