Fabrique Nationale FN MAG GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun)

The FN MAG is oft-regarded as the single-most successful post-1945 machine gun design and is still being produced today.

The FN MAG is the most successful of post-war (1945) machine gun designs. Over 150,000 units have been sold to various nations around the globe. Britain, Sweden and the United States maintain their licenses for production of the weapon. The MAG can be used in squad support, assault, or vehicle mounted roles (as the Model 60-30 or 60-40). The 60-40 model is a twin-mount. The 60-20 is the basic ground gun model.

The FN MAG can be found in varying forms for whatever the role may be. These include door-mounted pintle systems for helicopter usage and coaxial placements in tank turrets firing through a solenoid arrangement. The anti-aircraft version offers up ring-and-bead sights.

The success of the system can be traced back to its simple design and quality construction. The barrel changing process can be handled with a few short actions by the operator and the barrel itself is constructed heavy enough to offer up sustained fire for periods of time. The reliable belt-feed system works equally well for fixed or disintegrating belts.

Variants in the FN MAG family include:

Model 60-20 - Basic Ground Gun Model
Model 60-30 - Single-Mount Aircraft Version
Model 60-40 - Dual-Mount Aircraft Version
60-40 - Coaxial Armor Mount Variant based on the 60-20 pattern.
