One of the newest surface warships of the Russian Navy is Admiral Grigorovich, a guided-missile frigate serving the Black Sea Fleet. Its keel was laid down by Yantar of Kalingrad on December 18th, 2010 and she was launched on March 14th, 2014 to complete her trials and evaluation. The vessel was formally commissioned on March 11th, 2016 and maintains an active presence in the Black Sea Fleet - along with sister-ship Admiral Essen.

Admiral Grigorovich is one of several warships called to the Syrian Theater of War (Syrian Civil War) by the Russian military in November of 2016.

In all, six of the warships are planned for the Russian Navy - including Admiral Makarov (in trials), Admiral Butakov (under construction), Admiral Istomin (under construction) and Admiral Kornilov. The vessels are part of a planned two-batch construction effort for the Russian fleet. An additional two warships will be completed for the Indian Navy in a deal signed during October of 2016 - two will be completed by Russian shipbuilders with the remaining two to be built locally in Indian waters.

One complication of the Grigorovich-class effort has been the original install of Ukrainian marine turbines. With the fallout from the Russian annexation of Crimea, these engines are no longer a viable option for Russia in terms of procurement for the class - as such, several of the vessels remain semi-complete, lacking any installed propulsion power for the time being.

As it stands, the Grigorovich-class is an all-modern, powerful missile-armed frigate. Displacement is 3,620 tons under standard loads and over 4,000 tons under full loads. Length measures 409 feet with a beam of 50 feet and draught down to 14 feet. The crew complement numbers 200 men and onboard provisions allow the warship to remain away from port for a full month before requiring resupply.

Installed power for Admiral Grigorovich constitutes a COmbined Gas And Gas (COGAG) arrangement where multiple gas turbines share the load between cruising and dash speed travel. 2 x DS-71 gas turbines of 8,450 horsepower and 2 x DT-59 gas turbines of 22,000 horsepower are fitted, the former handling cruising duties and the latter dash speeding. Maximum attainable speed in ideal conditions can reach 30 knots, making Admiral Grigorovich a fast frigate. Range is out to 4,850 nautical miles.

Installed systems include the "Fregat" M2EM air search radar, the 3Ts-25E "Garpun-B", MR-212/201-1 and Nucleus-2 6000A surface search radar fits, and JSC 5P-10E "Puma" FCS, 3R14N-11356 FCS, MR-90 "Orekh" SAM FCS fire control radars. Electronic Warfare (EW) is through the TK-25E-5 suite and countermeasures handled by 4 x KT-216 series launchers.

Armament is a mix of offerings, both conventional (projectile-based) and missile-minded: 1 x 100mm A-190 "Arsenal" turreted deck gun (dual-purpose), 1 x 8-cell UKSK Vertical Launching System (VLS) (for Kalibr and 3M55 Oniks missiles), 2 x 12-cell VLS (3S90M "Shtil-1" missiles, 8 x Igla-1E (SA-16) surface-to-air missile launchers, 2 x "Kashtan" Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWSs), 2 x 533mm double torpedo tubes and 1 x RBU-6000 Anti-Submarine ROCket (ASROC) launcher.

Over the stern is a helipad for supporting 1 x Kamov Ka-27PL or Ka-31 series navy helicopter. These are critical to over-the-horizon operations and submarine-hunting.
