Before becoming the SSGN 726 as a missile submarine, the USS Ohio was known as the SSBN 726. By Staff Writer
The USS Ohio was from a family totaling three other ships in her Ohio-class, with those designated as USS Michigan, USS Florida and USS Georgia. Her primary responsibility since her inception in the early 1980's has been as a worldwide deterrent to aggression and for that she has served her role. Conversion and modernization have extended her initial intended lifespan and the vessel continues on in her role today.
As a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, the USS Ohio maintains its traditional array of 4 x 21" torpedo tubes but this is augmented by the ability for the vessel to field some 154 x BGM-109 series Tomahawk cruise missiles from 22 launch tubes. The submarine is powered by a single S8G nuclear reactor and can achieve speeds of up to 20 knots on the surface. Her surface displacement is listed at 16,765 tons while a value of 18,750 tons submerged is reported. Her officer and submariner crew totals some 153 specialists, commanders and general crew.
The USS Ohio was first ordered in 1974, laid down in 1976 and launched in 1979. She was officially commissioned in 1981 and makes her home in Bangor, Washington. As of this writing she is in active service with the United States Navy. The USS Ohio is affectionately known as "Ohydro" and serves under the banner motto of "Always First". Her construction was handled by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation.
