The new America-class LHAs will be replacing the Tarawa-class ships in USMC service. By Staff Writer
The USS America is slated to replace the Tarawa-class of ships in 2013. As the lead ship in her America-class family, she will take the role of amphibious assault ship a feature top-of-the line systems and resources in support of US Navy and US Marine operations around the globe. Her offensive air arm will consist of the tilt-rotor V-22 Osprey transport helicopters and the Lockheed F-35B V/STOL series of next generation jets. Additionally, the USS America will be able to field modern helicopter types already in use by those branches of service. Machinery will consist of gas turbine propulsion. Northrop Grumman Ship Systems is handling the construction to which the contract was awarded on June 1st, 2007.
