P-39 AIRACOBRA: FLYING SNAKE LACKS BITE

Image of the P-39 Airacobra

The Bell P-39 Airacobra had a lot going for it in terms of becoming America's next great fighter (1 x 37mm cannon; 4 x 12.7mm machine guns). Unfortunately for the type, US Army meddling insisted on rendering the aircraft to a more pedestrian role of close-support platform and stripping it of its vital high-performance turbosupercharger. The resulting design endeared itself to a very few and was particularly shunned by those expecting more. Nevertheless, the P-39 would go on to provide as a steady performer in the low-level assault role with the Soviet Air Force (via Lend-Lease), Australia and - of course - the Untied States of America. THE "BIG-E": ORIGINAL ENTERPRISE

black and white picture of USS Enterprise

As the complete overhaul of our Navy Ships section continues, relive the glory of one of the most decorated vessels in the history of the United States Navy. Without USS Enterprise and her commanders, airmen and pilots, the War in the Pacific might have taken on a different look by 1942. With USS Enterprise, America was given a mighty tool to help turn the tide of Japanese advance within the Pacific Rim. Proceed...>

BTR-70: BETTER THAN BTR-60

Picture of the BTR-70 armored personnel carrier

Never content on just one utilitarian design in the form of the BTR-60 armored personnel carrier, the Soviets unveiled the aptly-named BTR-70 to Western observers in a Moscow parade circa 1980. Since then, the system has seen countless miles of service with varied operators across the globe. The ability for the vehicle to carry combat-ready troops into battle at speed and traverse open water with little preparation makes the BTR-70 a solid general purpose platform and keeps it on the front lines even today.
