Every calendar year, the National Hurricane Center
produces a list of pre-approved names for tropical storms and hurricanes.
This has happened since 1953, with male names added in 1979. The
list appears in alphabetical order and is given to whatever tropical
storm or hurricane appears on the national satellite maps. Names
are eventually retired only if that storm is deemed particularly
destructive and powerful.
