The 'Acacia' was first seen in the early 1970s by Western eyes. By Staff Writer
The 2S3 Akatsiya ('Acacia') - M1973 when in the US inventory - was first unveiled in the early 1970's. It is a heavy caliber battlefield artillery support system and serves the same purpose that the US M109 SPG serves. A crew of 6 (4+2) man the weapon with the two loaders feeding projectiles in through open hatches in the rear.
The turret is fully powered and has 360 degree traversal with +60 degrees up and -4 degrees down capability. The 152mm main gun can fire a plethora of projectiles including HE-GRAG, HEAT-FS, AP-T, smoke and illuminating rounds a distance of 18,500 meters (11.5 miles). Rocket assisted projectiles can take that range higher to 24,000 meters (nearly 15 miles). The 2S3 can commonly be found in the inventories of former Soviet-supported states.
