helepolis The helepolis was put into action against Rhodes in 305 BC.
Ingenuity was not in short supply considering battles of the ancient world. The helepolis was sucha creation - a mammoth siege-type engine requiring some 200 operators to move the eight-wheeled behemoth into position. The multi-floor system housed projectile launchers (stones were the primary ammunition of choice), ladders to access upper floors and iron-plating to protect it's occupants within from enemy arrows and fire. The weapon was utilized by Demetrios Poliorketes against the city-state of Rhodes during a siege from 305 to 304 B.C. The entire structure measured in at some 141 feet in height. Helepolis translates to the aptly named "city-taker".
