The Persian Gulf War of 1991:

The Persian Gulf War of 1991 can very well be considered the first war of the digital age. Smart bombs, global positioning devices and remote attacks exploded on the new battlefield. The large coveted Iraqi ground force (made up primarily of Soviet equipment) was at the mercy of NATO forces led by the United States of America - eager to try out some new gadgetry. The war began with an all out air strike on air defense systems and aircraft via strike fighters, attack helicopters and cruise missiles. The constant barrage of ariel munitions meant that the Iraqi Air Force would be kept on the ground and their armored forces were now left at the mercy of the ensuing assault by allied armor divisions. In the end, the air attack left Iraq utterly defenseless and beaten back - the fourth largest army in the world - now blinded - was then destroyed in a short 100-hour ground campaign.

Unveiled in the assault for the first time was the F-117 Stealth Fighter "Night Hawk", delivering one of the early blows in the campaign. Additionally, the M1 Abrams proved her worth as did the aging A-10 Thunderbolt II system while the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter came of age. The Persian Gulf War was a stunning success in the sense that the strategic goal was the forcing out of Iraqi forces from US-ally and oil-rich partner Kuwait.
