The Mikoyan-Gurevich family of aircraft have had a long and illustrious history dating back to the rise of Soviet forces against German aggression in World War II. The acronym itself, "MiG", came to symbolize a generic term for all Soviet aircraft in the Cold War from an American point of view. From the early piston-engine fighters to the latest in jet-powered advanced tactical trainers and technology demonstrators, the MiG firm has proven to be one of the best and most creative aircraft engineering firms in the world. Models of MiG design have seen combat from Stalingrad, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Cold War. The systems have proven far resilient than western estimators expected, with some of the older models still seeing service in some parts of the world. Needless to say, the Mikoyan-Gurevich series of aircraft will continue to be a large part of the Russian defense and offense for decades to come. Below is a listing of these such aircraft complete with operational service year when available.
