The G.222 was a medium transport produced by the Aeritalia corporation that saw some modest successes. The aircraft was designed to fit the need for short runway take-off and landings from rough airstrips and to provide the Italian military with a replacement to their aging Fairchild C-119 transport cargo series. The end result the G.222 (bearing a resemblence to the similar Lockheed C-130 Hercules line) as a twin-engine aircraft with a sloping tail section featuring a power-operated rear entry ramp. The wing elements were high-mounted on the middle of the fuselage with the flight deck far forward. A single rudder sat atop the raised tail section and there would be crew accommodations for 3. An electronic countermeasures (ECM) alternative was also produced by the time production ended. Besides the implied ECM equipment on board this model, the ECM version would also take on a full crew compliment of 10 specialists.
