BAe / Hawker Siddeley Nimrod Long-range Maritime Reconnaissance / Anti-Submarine Aircraft (1968)

Authored By Staff Writer | Last Updated: 9/16/2008

The Nimrod design was based highly on the pre-existing Comet 4 aircraft.

The Nimrod aircraft came about as a replacement for the aging and World War Two-era piston-engine Avro Shackleton. Charged with maritime patrol of coastal waters and reconnaissance, the Nimrod had its beginnings on the civilian Comet 4 airframe. From there, the Nimrod would come into its own, seeing upgrades that would potentially extend the life of the system.

Successful development of base Nimrods led to the initial production batch of 46 Nimrod MR.Mk 1 series. Fitted with an array of anti-ship and reconnaissance equipment, the Nimrod could also sport internal bomb and torpedo loads as necessary. Additionally, later models offered up four additional hardpoints externally to field even more potent air-to-surface missiles and mine dispensing munitions.

Crew accommodations vary per model. The MRA.Mk 4 (or "Nimrod 2000") can house a base flight crew of two personnel along with 7 specialists in designated roles. Additionally, up to 13 relief crewmembers can be carried aboard for extended flights. The Nimrod MRA.4 can be fielded for a full 15 hours of endurance time, extending the eyes and ears of coastal defense for as long as need be.

The unique design offers up a good view from the cockpit, particularly downwards considering the nose slopes as such. The quad engine array is mounted directly into the wing systems near the roots and various reconnaissance and communications facilities are added in pod form throughout the design.

As such, the success of previous Nimrods allowed the MRA.Mk 4 to proceed as the next logical stepping stone in the series, beating out proposed replacements in the form of the Orion 2000, Atlantique 3 and the P-3 Valkrie systems offered up from other contractors. This latest Nimrod addressed nearly every major internal system for the better, increasing the life span of the important machine.
