Military BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing)
BAH, as its name suggests, is an allowance provided by the United States military to eligible service members to help offset the cost of housing. The rate is determined by local rental markets and available when government-provided housing is not provided. The overseas equivalent to this is the Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA). For the BAH, cost of utilities is factored in and a Rate Protection measure ensures that the service member will retain at least his/her support from the previous year on a year-to-year basis. Rates will also vary based on choice of housing and locale as the service member is free to choose where he/she will live based on individual family need(s).
